A Brief History if Diabetes Test

Diabetes has been around for hundreds of years and there have been many diabetes tests developed over time. The very first cases of diabetes were not called diabetes though a Greek physician did consider one case to be an issue with the kidneys. One of the first diabetes tests used was drinking a patient’s urine. This was used since before Christ all the way up to the 11 century. It was thought that people with diabetes had sweeter tasting urine.

In the 16th century diabetes was diagnosed as a general disorder and the very first chemical diabetes tests were developed in the beginning of the 19th century. These diabetes tests measured the amount of sugar in the urine. A great step in diabetes treatment occurred during the Franco-Prussian War when a French physician realized that each individual with diabetes responds differently so they need tailor made diets.

In 191 the first diabetes clinic was established in the USA where those with diabetes could seek treatment and it was also possible to take a diabetes test. It was not until 1959 that the two different types of diabetes could be separated into type I and type II. Home diabetes testing kits were developed in the 1960s so that individuals could easily use a diabetes test to determine their urine sugar levels.

In 1970 further diabetes tests were developed that checked the level of glucose in the blood. Currently diabetes test are very quick and easy and if you are over 30 then you should try to take a diabetes test with your yearly check up. If you do not have the money there are clinics that offer free diabetes tests as many institutions are trying to raise people awareness of the possibility of developing Type II diabetes.
